A CHANGE IS GONNA COME * SAM COOKE * RCA 8486 * USA
A seminal track from the king of Soul. It is said that Sam Cooke wrote A Change is Gonna Come after he was taken aback by the message in Bob Dylan's Blowing in the Wind. First released in it's entirety on the Good News album in 1964, then, the following year, as an edited version (above) on the B side of Shake. The song is a haunting and poignant description of the ambitions, struggles, and needs of a black American in the middle part of the Twentieth century. Although the song lists the singers troubles and pain it is ultimately optimistic, and is not only a fine Soul song but also an expression of an emerging black consciousness, a civil rights song.
