Slim Harpo, whose other name was James Moore, was born in West Baton Rouge, January 1924. His early recordings (all for the Excello label) were considered Blues enough to be listed in what was for years (in England at least) the standard reference work for Blues recordings: Mike Leadbitter and Neil Slaven's Blues Records 1943 - 1966. His records belong in part to both Blues and Soul categorisations and ultimately to one: the Top Class category.
