BREAD WINNER * SAMMY WARD * SOUL 35004 * USA
A Tamla label called Soul always seems somehow not quite right, its not that the music is not Soul music, the above is as good a piece of Soul as you can get, it's just Tamla or Motown is already a genre, and saying Soul Tamla just seems to clash a bit. There was another two labels called Soul [and plenty called Soul something or other] one was also in Detroit and the other was in Los Angeles. The Tamla Soul label came on the market in March 1964 with Shorty Long and a heart expanding title Devil With The Blue Dress On just three issues prior to this one, the imprint ran to one hundred and twenty three issues, finishing in March 1978 with Major Lance's Chicago Disco. This was Sammy Ward's only release on the label, although he had had a handful of 45s on the Tamla imprint as 'Singing' Sammy Ward from as far back as 1960.
