Joe Simon started out singing as a member of the Golden Tones who recorded a brace of records for the Oakland independent Hush label California, he followed these recordings, also on Hush, with a handful of his first solo outings; he then moved to the tiny Irral label, in Los Angeles. He kept on moving, from Irral he went to Dot, then to Gee Bee, then Vee Jay, before settling at Fred Foster's Nashville based Sound Stage 7 in 1966. He stayed with SS7 until 1970 releasing a total of seventeen 45s; The Chokin' Kind was the tenth. The song, written by Country singer/songwriter Harlen Howard and first recorded by Waylon Jennings in 1967.
