1966

THE BEAT * MAJOR LANCE * SOUL CITY 114 * UK

Released in the US on OKeh 7255, The Beat was something of a sequel or counterpart to Rhythm, an up-tempo cut like his earlier dance orientated tracks like Monkey Time and The Matador

Inexplicably although his OKeh releases were being issued on the British Columbia label they chose not to issue The Beat and it was Dave Goodin at Soul City that chose to rectify this some three years later. Unfortunately for me although I'd had this record from around the time of its British release I had thought it was a 1969 recording and therefore an attempt to cash in on his earlier success and as the sound of Soul had become much more Funky by then I was listing out for different things. It wasn't until much later that I was able to give this cut a proper listen and put it in it's correct historical perspective that I fully appreciated what I had been missing, i.e. another great Major Lance recording.
