BEHIND A PAINTED SMILE * ISLEY BROTHERS * TAMLA MOTOWN 693 * UK
Originally the B side to All Because I Love You in the US Behind A Painted Smile was released in Great Britain in April 1969, by which time the Isley Brothers had parted from the Motown Corporation. The record has a very ethereal beginning with what sounds like an opening to a Verdi concerto played on a lute and spinet, which forms a stark contrast to the decisive whacking of the snare drum that interrupts it after about fifteen seconds, and it was the snare drum that memorably ends the number with a distinctive bomp, bobadomp, bomp!
