(NATIVE GIRL) ELEPHANT WALK * DONALD JENKINS & THE DELIGHTERS * CORTLAND 109 * USA
"When your stomach speaks, you forget your mind, when your mind speaks you forget your heart, but when your heart speaks you forget everything"
Underneath this slightly awkward song it's pure Chicago Soul, where, undoubtedly, Curtis Mayfield's influence can be felt. Donald Jenkins took a chance with this song, it certainly doesn't follow the pattern of most love songs as it changes form and direction throughout, because of which it is always tantalizingly close to failure and for me this is part of its beauty. Through these changes the song actually goes from strength to strength and though, I guess, that it is not to everyone's taste, thanks to Liam it is one of my most beautiful discoveries of recent times. A truly stunning cut chock full of Soul.
