THE WAY YOU DO THE THINGS YOU DO * THE TEMPTATIONS * STATESIDE 278 * UK

The history of the Temptations is a long and complex one, their previous incarnations as groups includes: The Cavaliers, The Primes, The Elegants, Otis Williams & The Siberians, The Questions, The El Domingoes, The Voice Masters, Ty Hunter & The Voice Masters,  The Distants, The Elgins, added to which David Ruffin was known as Little David Bush, before they were finally called The Temptations. Their first record as the Temptations with the line up consisting of: Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams and Elbrige Bryant, was Oh, Mother Of Mine / Romance Without Finance on Berry Gordy's Miracle label, in 1961. The above, produced by Smokey Robinson, was released on Gordy 7028 in January 1964, with Eddie Kendricks singing lead vocals. It was the first Temptations 45 issued in the UK, released three months after its American debut, in April 1964, and, it goes without saying, was a big hit with the Mods.
