As a Gospel group the Soul Stirrers go back to the late 1920s and although they performed live and on the radio their first recordings weren't until 1948 for the Alladin label. Sam Cooke Joined the group as a nineteen year old in 1950, and stayed several years, his place as lead singer was replaced by Johnnie Taylor, who left in 1963 when Jimmy Otler took lead until 1967. The Checker Gospel series ran from 1964 until 1969 with some sixty eight issues in all.
