CHICKEN SHACK * AMOS MILBURN * ALADDIN 3332 * USA
Piano player and vocalist Amos Milburn died in 1980 at just 52, but left behind some of the most hard driving Rockin' Rhythm and Blues records recorded, and the above was the hardest; although, like both hard driving rockers Fats Domino and Little Richard who came after him, he could also cut it on the mellow side. Among his first releases for Aladdin was Down The Road Apiece in 1946 his recordings marked a link between the older Boogie Woogie style of the pre war era and the new emerging post war Rhythm and Blues sound. In 1948 he recorded the first version of Chicken Shack, the second recording, above, was a big hit; and, incidentally, contains an ingenious reference to homosexuality. Amos Milburn left Aladdin the same year he released the above, he made something of a comeback when he signed with Motown in 1962
