The title sounds like it might be a bit nihilistic, whereas it is a love song that is actually celebrating the object of his affections! The question can be also seen as not being rhetorical, but a positive step to self awareness. Arthur Millar,  in his play The Price, has one of the actors say, ostensibly to other members of the cast, "We are all dieing here." Given the title of this song it's a sad irony that Chuck Willis did actually die on April 10th 1958 shortly after making this record.
