BROKEN-HEARTED MELODY * SARAH VAUGHAN * MERCURY 1057 * GB

Sarah Vaughan, March 1924  - April 1990.  In 1942 she entered and won an amateur-night contest for which she sang Body and Soul. She became vocalist to two of the big bands during the 1940s, Earl "Fatha" Hines and Billy Eckstine's band. Known as a jazz vocalist she recorded the hit Lover Man (1945) with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, before launching her solo career in 1946, in 1949, she landed a five-year recording contract with Columbia Records. The above is very pop orientated with a Latin beat, sounding much like the proto Soul records of that time.
