LING, TING, TONG * THE CHARMS * DE LUXE 6076 * USA
The Charms were from the Cincinnati area and consisted of lead singer Otis Williams, Ron Bradley, Donald Peak Joe Penn and Richard Parker. Their ninth De Luxe release the novelty 'jiver', Ling, Ting, Tong was issued in December 1954, three months after the original version by The Five Keys on Capitol (see below on a Dutch Picture Sleeve release from 1980),
Because influential disc jockey Alan Freed refused to play cover versions, in an attempt to promote and protect the, invariably original versions, of songs by black artists being commercially exploited by white Pop entertainers, he never played many of the records by The Charms as they had a habit of recording covers.
