AM I BLUE * BILLIE HOLIDAY * FONTANA 17026 * UK

Though it's difficult for me to chose between Body And Soul and Am I Blue but at the moment it's Am I Blue that appeals to me most from this c1960 EP. All of the four songs on this record were recorded at different sessions with different backing bands, on Am I Blue, recorded 9th May 1941, the band consisted of Roy Eldridge, trumpet; Ernie Powell, James Powell, Lester Boone, saxes; Eddie Heywood, piano; Paul Chapman, guitar; Grachan Moncur, bass and Herbert Cowans, drums. In the sleeve notes to this record Benny Green places these recordings in the third and greatest period of the artists career, that of the consummation of all she had learnt, developed and achieved in the previous two; he also adds that he, "speaking as one who has been an instrumentalist all his life. . .. has no hesitation in ranking Billie Holiday as one of the very greatest Jazz musicians of all time."
