AFRICAN SAFARI * LORD BRYNER + RONALD BRIDGES & HIS ORCH. * RCA VICTOR 7-1289 * T
This is another early 'back to Africa' song from the West Indies, and is very much a precursor to many such songs; I see a direct linier trajectory from this to say: Africa by The Gaylads, then African Descendants by Alton Ellis. It's interesting to note how, on this recording, Lord Bryner drops his usual tongue-in-cheek style and adopts a very serious tone, added to which there is a prominent female chorus and an almost orchestral sounding musical backing, making this Calypso a quite different recording from the vast body of work by him and other 'Calypsonians'.
