BROTHER DAVID * LAUREL AITKEN WITH THE BLUE BEATS * BLUE BEAT 84 * UK
Laurel Aitken moved, with his family, from his native Cuba to Western Kingston in 1938 aged eleven. Some time in the 1940s he began his musical career singing in the style of Louis Jordan and Nat Cole, also turning his hand to the popular Calypso style. Although he had already cut some R&B style records it was when he met up with the Englishman Chris Blackwell who recorded Laurel as the first release on his embryonic Island label, the record Boogie In My Bones was a smash hit and spent 11 weeks on top of the radio play charts in Jamaica. Laurel Aitken emigrated to England in 1960 where he recorded the above Gospel flavored song for Melodisc.
