FORWARD MARCH * DERRICK MORGAN * BEVERLY'S * JA
After recording with Prince Buster for a couple of years Derrick Morgan had a string of hits for producer Leslie Kong. Forward March was his celebration of the Jamaican peoples new found independence; and was, not surprisingly, a popular record as a wave of optimism swept the country.
The song did have some controversy surrounding it and started the infamous feud, on record, between Prince Buster and Derrick Morgan; as Buster claimed that the Saxophone solo, played by Headley Bennett, was a rip off of Lester Stirling's solo on the Buster produced They Got To Come.
Forward March was also popular enough in the UK to have an album of the same name, featuring a young suited and booted Derrick Morgan on the cover with the all important 'Blue Beat' hat, a highly significant Mod accessory at the time.
Derrick Morgan also produced and recorded the song himself again in 1972 (see below) though with not as much success as the 1st version.
