INDEPENDENT JAMAICA * LORD CREATOR * CREATIVE * JA
Independent Jamaica was the official independence song to mark the occasion when Jamaica gained full independence from the commonwealth on the 6th August 1962. The withdrawal was the result of a referendum that was given to the people in 1961, the Jamaican people had only gained universal adult suffrage fifteen years earlier.
A Randy's production the song was credited to Lord Creator and S. Sparrow (Slinger Francisco or Mighty Sparrow), Lord Creator a. k. a. Kentrick Patrick, is backed by The Joe Williams Orchestra.
Independent Jamaica was released in the UK as the first issue of Chris Blackwell's Island Records. Given the 001 catalogue number (it would seem he only initially envisioned 100 releases!) the record was first released with the original Jamaican title but mis-spelt 'Independant', on the ‘4. Rutland Gate Mews’ imprint, this was later changed to the ‘London England’ imprint with the altered 'Calypso' title, and added date (see below).
The British issue with the added word Calypso in the title possibly a diagnostic, as a way of appealing to a wider audience many of whom would be, by and large, ignorant of any musical style from the West Indies other than Calypso.
Lord Creator followed up a year later with his celebration of Jamaica's 1st anniversary with the eponymous Jamaica's Anniversary recorded for Coxsone Dodd and released on his Muzik City label JA and the Port-O-Jam imprint in the UK (see below).
