KING OF KINGS * JIMMY CLIFF * ISLAND 070 * UK
James Chambers, aka Jimmy Cliff was one of the first vocalists to find some degree of popularity in the UK his Pre Ska songs for producer Leslie Kong were amongst the most recognised on juke boxes in the cafe's where West Indian immigrants would gather; and for many years as his King Of Kings was still being pressed after the label had changed to the 'bow-tie' design (see blow).
Back in Jamaica by the time he recorded for Leslie Kong's Beverly label as Jimmy Cliff, he had already recorded for Sound System operators Count Boysie and Sir Cavaliers.
King Of Kings is a solid cut with Jimmy larging himself up, as "king of kings", "lord of lord's" and, as if that wasn't enough as "double strong" to boot! What adds extra spice to this record is the opening sound of a roaring lion sounding like it's in a air conditioning duct!
