Tenor saxophonist Lovall Bennett, who died in 1991, is said to have only been recording for around half a dozen years before leaving the music business in disgust at the shoddy way he was treated by producers, non-the-less he has left an enduring legacy not least for his unforgettable lead on Return To Jango. On Demonstration, produced by Clancy Eccles, he keeps up an intricate and pace setting lead on what is a version of the old Afro-American Spiritual Down By The Riverside, sometimes referred to as Study War No More; also of note is the mesmeric bass line that sounds as if it was played in a hollowed out bamboo pole.
