PICKNEY GAL * DESMOND DEKKER * PYRAMID 6078 * UK
Although few knew it at the time Desmond Dekker wrote this song about his younger sister, who, it turns out, had got herself 'knocked up', possibly without being in a stable relationship, as brother Dekker doesn't seem best pleased. Set to a very laid back Early Reggae beat, Desmond Dekker gives the impression in his phrasing of the line: "Pickney girl come here", to be metaphorically putting the brakes on and slowing down his sister's attempt at escaping his admonishments; this slowing down is echoed in the chorus line !Pickney girl" sung by what sounds very much like other pickney (young) girls. Whether by design or intuition this slowing down, almost slurring aspect of his singing, give the song, for me, a real sense of an actual event.
