Harold Melvin (1939 - 1997) started his musical career singing Doowop, the group were known just as The Blue Notes when they cut their first record for the Josie label in 1964. It wasn't until eight years and many labels later that he found success with the scorching Soul ballad If You Don't Know Me By Now the groups biggest selling single up to that point. reaching #1 on the R&B charts and #5 Pop.
Released in the US on the Philadelphia International label #
3520 (see below) this track, along with Me And Mrs Jones and Love
Train, all big sellers in the UK helped persuade CBS,
the UK distributors of Philadelphia International, to give future releases their
own UK equivalent imprint.
