I THOUGHT IT WAS YOU * HERBIE HANCOCK * CBS 6530 * UK

Herbie Hancock uses a 'vocoder' to affect his voice in an appealing manor which gives the song an extra dimension in a way which is hard to pin down. The vocoder, in the form Herbie Hancock uses it, was developed by Wendy Carlos and Robert Moog in 1970, yet the first vocoders were built in 1928 at Bell laboratories and used effectively during WWII for encrypted communications. The first Pop group to use the instrument were Kraftwerk on their album Autobahn.
