Brenda Payton was just sixteen when she formed her first group The Joyettes in 1965, the following year she, along with Jerry Jones, Eddie Jackson and Maurice Coates, made Dry Your Eyes her debut recording as Brenda & The Tabulations for Dionn #500. The group had a total of eight releases for Dionn before relocating to Top & Bottom in 1969. It was while at Top & Bottom that the groups line up changed to Brenda Payton, Pat Mercer and Deborah Martin.
By 1972 the girls were recording for the major label Epic, written and arranged by Van McCoy One Girl Too Late was their second for the label.
