This song was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and originally recorded by The Beatles for their White Album released in 1968. On his version  Richie Havens doesn't actually bring a great deal extra to the song except maybe his voice which seems to me more emotionally charged than Paul McCartney's somewhat detached reporting version.  Richie Havens is one of those singers who tends to stay outside of mainstream categorisations often choosing to sing in different idioms like Folk, Blues, Rock, Soul, Psychedelia and others, it's like he was free to go wherever the music takes him  For more on  Richie Havens go to this  fans site
