WE DID IT * SYL JOHNSON * HI 2229 * USA
Syl Johnson a. k. a. Sylvester Thompson, cut his first records for the Federal in 1959, it wasn't until 1970 that he started to record for Hi records of Memphis; We Did It was his third for the label. The song on the surface seems to be only about attaining a gratifying achievement, yet on further listening is about a whole lot of complex issues, much of which would have gone unnoticed by two young people, possibly listening to the song in a 'disco' at the time of its release, moving towards a particular point in a romantic relationship. The recording has an energy of optimism that is somehow part of this action, as if somehow what Syl Johnson is singing about the is transmuted into the agent of its actual existence. An indefinable force that spurs people irresistibly towards the celebrated outcome of the song. It must be said that Leigh Roberts [?] of Worthing, Sussex was a part of this loose supposition while still in her educational position at the time.
