POLICE AND THIEVES * JUNIOR MURVIN * ISLAND 6539 * UK

Written by Junior Murvin and produced by Lee Perry, and, as it says on the label, used in the outstandingly good film Rockers; Police And Thieves became something of an  unlikely underground hit in the UK (though not in his native Jamaica) the record reached a wider (white middle class) audience partly because it was covered by the Punk group Clash on their debut album and was also given lots of air play on top DJ John Peel's influential radio program. Originally planed as a documentary the 1978 film Rockers was written and directed by  Ted Bafaloukos and stared a host of Reggae artists including the magnificent Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace, the mighty Burning Spear, the incredible Big Youth and the late lamented Jacob Miller, a film that must be seen.
