INDIAN SUMMER * LESTER STERLING AND HIS GROUP * R&B 172 * UK

Lester Sterling leads on most of this laid back instrumental, with a saxophone break, from either Tommy McCook or Roland Alphonso, and a sweet trumpet break, possibly from Johnny 'Dizzy' Moore. Originally titled An American IdyllIndian Summer was written in 1919 as a composition for piano and orchestra by Victor August Herbert (1859 - 1924) the son of Edward Herbert and Fanny Lover. It was recorded some twenty years later with added lyrics by Al Dubin, by The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra with featured vocalist Frank Sinatra. It is possible that saxophonist Lester Sterling was familiar with either the Tommy Dorsey or the Glen Miller version from the same year, or he could have learnt the tune from the 1938 edition of the Victor Herbert Song Album - Book 2 while a pupil at The Alpha Boys School.
