MAGIC STARR * SOUL BROTHERS * ISLAND 292 * GB

Roger Dalke, in 'A Scorcher from Studio One', charts the history of Coxsone Dodd's principal recording band as beginning with the likes of: The Joe Williams Band, then, The All Stars and The Blues Blasters, which was usually fronted by the Clue' J.', then from about 1959 to 1963 it would be bands with known front men like, Roland And His Alley Cats, or His Upsetters (yes folks pre Scratch) Don Drummond And His Greenlanders, or Monty And The Cyclones, from 1963 through most of 1964 it would be an instrumentalist and 'His Group', like: Tommy McCook And His Group. then in late 1964 came The Skatalites (sometimes written as Ska-Talites) sometime towards the end of 1965 that same 'group', minus Don Drummond (who had been interred for the murder of his fiancée) emerged as The Soul Brothers, which in turn lasted until early 1967 to be followed by another name change to The Soul Defenders, this name endured for most of the Rock Steady period, to be in it's turn succeeded by The Soul Defenders, and onto The New Establishment. Other names of Studio One backing bands from the early 1970s are: The Brentford Road Disco Set , and The Underground Vegetables.
