The idea for this song, and the title, is taken from the Varetta Dillard's Mercy Mr Percy released on Savoy 897 in 1953. The Termites, Loyd Parks and Wentworth Vernal, could well have heard the original record while growing up and although the lyrics of the original song, which would certainly banned in todays moral climate, have been changed they obviously still had a strong desire to use the idea of compasion and clemency in a song.
