NANNY GOAT * LARRY AND ALVIN * SUPREME 00013 * JA

Original first press to Nanny Goat, a record that is now generally held to be one of the first releases on the new Reggae rhythm. Larry and Alvin is; Fitzroy 'Larry' Marshal, born 1941, St. Anns, Jamaica, and Alvin Leslie. They had a number of records issued on various Dodd labels, including the excellent Mean Girl, from 1969, and Throw Me Corn from 1971. Larry Marshall also recorded some top sides as a solo artist for Dodd, including Run Babylon. Larry never achieved any real recognition that I believe his contribution to Reggae deserved, and is, at the time of writing, suffering from prostrate cancer and having to work on a building site in Miami to earn some money to help cover medical costs.

Like many songs Nanny Goat has been covered by other artists, there are some seventy cuts on the rhythm as listed by riddimguide alone and, at the time of writing 22/12/2013 that list doesn't include the Glen Ricks cut (see below) and possibly many others yet to be added; a testament to the richness and plasticity of this music.
