MOVEMENTS * COUNT MACHUKI * AMALGAMATED 867 * UK

Winston Cooper a.k.a. Count Machuki was one of the pioneers of the musical style known as Dee Jaying, or Toasting, in fact he is sited as being the first to be recognized as such. It was while with Clement Dodd's Down Beat Sound System that Machuki first started to Toast, i.e. using a microphone to interject through the sound system  a line, or two, of verse, or whatever, of his own construction over the top of the record that was playing at the time .Originally this form of creative vocalization would be ephemeral, and most often relevant to the situation at hand, or the general events of the day. Also the interjections could be used to advertise either the recording artist, and / or the producer / Sound System operator, as is the case with the above (listen closely at the end of the record) cut for Joe Gibbs Pressure Beat label in Jamaica.
