VIGORTON TWO * KING STITT * CLANDISC 202 * UK
Winston Cooper, a. k. a. King Stitt or The Ugly One (so called because of his profoundly exciting features) was, for a long time, Coxsone Dodd's number one set deejay, and although King Stitt worked with the Downbeat Sound System from 1957 to 1969, Coxsone never released any records by him during that time. It wasn't till he recorded Lick It Back for Clancy Eccles in 1969 that he had his unique and dynamic Toasting committed to wax. Out side of those fortunate enough to have witnessed King Stitt on top form at a Down Beat Sound System dance - which must surely must rank as one of the supreme moments of entertainment in the second half of the 20th century anywhere in the Western world - very few people had even heard of the concept of a Deejay in the Jamaican sense let alone heard any of them.
