U Roy's real name is Ewart Beckford, it was a relation, unable to pronounce the name Ewart, who shortened it to Ew, and thus christened him U. Although U Roy did not cut his first records at Treasure Isle, the first three he did release for Duke Reid, with King Tubby as producer, were all smash hits, occupying the top three positions on both Jamaican charts.
