In 1960 five girls all from different parts of Brooklyn, Barbara Alston, Delores (Dee Dee) Kennibrew, Mary Thomas, Merna Girard and Pat Wright were formed into the Crystals by former big band musician Benny Wells, their name was taken from song writer Leroy Bates daughter 'Crystal Bates'.
