Tammi Terrell was born Tammi Montgomery in 1945. Tammi, or Tommy as she was known to her family, began recording in 1960 with Scepter/Wand and signed to Motown in 1965. She was a girlfriend of James Brown for a while and toured with him prior to joining Motown. While she was with Motown she became romantically involved with David Ruffin and worked closely with Marvin Gaye although they were not lovers but very close friends. When Tammi died in 1970 Marvin was so crushed by her death that he withdrew from recording in late 1969 until 1971 and from the stage until 1972.
