I WANT TO GO BACK THERE AGAIN * CHRIS CLARK * TAMLA MOTOWN 638 * UK
Chris Clark was one of Motown's first white singers, she had joined the company as a Blues singer in 1963 but worked as a receptionist for two years before recording a demo for Berry Gordy, after which she returned to her receptionist duties for a further year. Her break came in December 1965 when Gordy released Do Right Baby, Do Right on the V. I. P label # 25031, the record was never released as a single in the UK but her follow up Love's Gone Bad was, on Tamla Motown 591. I Want To Go Back There Again was her third release for the V. I. P. label and was co-written by her with Berry Gordy; the song has that certain je ne sais quoi which enables it, like good wines and wooden furniture, to improve with the passing of time, as the (achingly) nostalgic yearning it embodies encompasses more and more of the life lived by the listener.
