JUST ONE LOOK * DORIS TROY * LONDON ATLANTIC 9749 * UK
Doris Troy was from New York, she was born Doris Higginsen, and for a time toured with a jazz flavoured vocal group calling themselves the Halos, she was also writing songs at this time. Her first success came with How About That recorded by Dee Clark. It was while working as an usherette at the famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem that she was 'spotted' by James Brown and pretty soon she was contracted to Atlantic where she recorded the magnificent Just One Look her self penned debut release.
When Just One Look was released in 1963 none of the major labels like Atlantic, Stax and Motown had yet to formalized their sound (the new Soul sound) and were still pushing and searching. With what could almost be described as a circa 1968 early reggae beat this top Mod track certainly sounded different and that was at a time when almost everything sounded different.
