The song was written and made famous by Otis Redding in 1964, and was one of a new breed of 'social awareness' songs, inspired in part by the bourgeoning civil rights movement. Etta's treatment of the song, produced by Rick Hall, is a tour de force,  a proverbial combination KO punch; as she not only addresses the previous concerns sung by Otis's, but those of her gender.
