SAD SWEET DREAMER * DENNIS WALKS * MOODISC 8236 * UK
Sad Sweet Dreamer was originally recorded by eight piece British Soul group Sweet Sensation, who had a number one hit UK (# 14 US) with the song. Styled on the then popular Soul sound of Philadelphia the song is pure pre and early teen schmaltz, just about as cloying and sentimental as it gets . . . yet, set to a cool Lovers Rock rhythm, played by the 'all star' musicians at a Harry Moodie's recording session, and sung slightly off lyrical exactness by Dennis Walks the track becomes eminently listenable for those who are, like me, beginning to appreciate these sounds more and more.
