DONNA THE PRIMA DONNA * DION * CBS 169 * UK

Dion Francis Di Mucci' known as Dion had grown up in a tough neighborhood, with all that implies, the Bronx and after scoring some initial successes with his group The Belmonts (named after a street in the Bronx) the record companies tried with him what they did with most successful Rock and Roll singers at the time, they attempted to make an 'easy listening' type crooner out of him. The purpose of which had nothing to do with music or the art of the performer but purely the record companies profits. Fortunately Dion was made of stronger stuff and resisted this pressure and pursued his own aggressive style, creating such great recordings as The Wanderer and Runaround Sue. The above brash, old style rocker Donna, The Prima Donna is very much in that vein and all the better for it.
