Ray Charles was able to remain an icon of soul fans in England from his first releases on disc in 1958 to well into the mid 1960s. Young Mods in the South even sought his earlier Atlantic cuts from the mid 1950s, when the British Decca label issued them on a two album set as The Ray Charles Story volume's 1 & 2 in 1962, an uncharacteristic thing for them as their focus was firmly set on the contemporary.
