Edith May Stith, a. k. a. Mae Barnes was born in 1907 and grew up in Manhattan, she left school at the age of twelve and got a job as a dancer in the Plantation club in Harlem. She had considerable success as a dancer but a car accident in 1938 led her to turn her talents to singing, and was known for her songs which asserted her race. The above is the second Atlantic Extended Play release, most of the first thirty of which were put together from tracks culled from the Atlantic Jazz series.
