SAMMY NO DEAD * CLANCY ECCLES * SKA BEAT 194 * UK
A Lyndon O. Pottinger production for SEP records Jamaica. This is Clancy Eccles in his pre production days singing on this lively Ska. The song is a version of the traditional Jamaican folk song; Sammy Dead Oh, which, according to the sleeve notes of Songs From Jamaica (Argo), was first heard in Manchester (Jamaica). And goes on to say, "Sammy, a thriving young planter, was believed to have been 'obeah'd' by neighbors when his crop flourished, and died shortly afterwards". And in the song "The singers lament his death, and say he has gone to hell trough no fault of his own". Interestingly on the same Argo album, amongst the other songs featured, all sung by Edric Connor and The Caribbeans, are: Hill An' Gully, Chi-Chi Bud Oh, Rookoombine and a song called Doctor Bud! (bud = bird)
