1954

THE WIND * THE DIABLOS * FORTUNE 511 * USA

The Diablos second release on Dorothy and Jack  Brown's Detroit independent label Fortune, Nolan Strong's vocals on this and other Diablos recordings was to exert a powerful influence on the likes of Smokey Robinson and what was later to become the Detroit sound. The Wind issued in September 1954, was to become one of the most original and outstanding records from the Doo Wop era; on playing  the listener can be seduced into thinking they have heard the sound of real wind, or at least some sound effect, but there is none, so magnificent is the combination of Nolan Strong's beautiful voice, the fantastic arrangement and the vocal backing on the "blow wind" chorus. The record was re-released in May 1960 and again February 1962 on Fortune with the same catalogue number, the above, rather distressed copy, could be from this second period.
