For simplicity and endurance coupled with a timeless feel The Drifter rhythm ranks alongside such giants as My Conversation, Shaking Up Orange Street and Skylarking. Produced by Harry Mudie The Drifter was first issued in the UK on the newly launched Crab label as a b side! One of only two Mudie productions on Crab it was to become, with time, the tune most associated with him. Dennis Walks was born Dennis Vassell, he released other good and popular records produced by Mudie after this one, like Under The Shady Tree, Time Will Tell, and, Margaret, but none of them was to equal the success and continuing popularity of this titan, except maybe I Roy's Version which, it's fair to say, isn't really a Dennis Walks disc. Apart from the I Roy, there have been endless top tracks cut from this seemingly inexhaustible standard, Bongo Herman did a great bongo drumming version over it called Car Pound Drifter, and even at the end of the 1990's after two decades of untold use of the rhythm Dennis was back, this time with his son, cutting an electronic version of it!
