Mable John was born in Louisiana, the eldest of nine children one of which was Little Willie John, the family later moved to Detroit where Mable met, and became friends with Berry Gordy's family. Her debut for Gordy's fledgling Tamla label You Made A Fool Out Of Me was the first by a female artist on the label. She had three more releases before being dropped by Gordy in 1962, she joined Ray Charles backing group for a while and in 1966 she signed with Stax, the above was her first record for the label, and was to be her biggest hit.
