WHO'S MAKING LOVE * JOHNNIE TAYLOR * STAX 106 * UK

The pub disco, a new type of dance venue, was emerging in London and the South East of England when this record was being played, and it's bold lyrics and brash musical style suited these aggressively commercial premises. The recording is also one of those that seems to mark a change in style and sound, very difficult to define or pin down, yet when first heard it sounds like the herald of a new a age. Though not particularly sophisticated or Funky, Who's Making Love does seem to blend many of the ingredients that were to mark out the music of the following decade; the high octane and smart 'up-town' sound of Disco, the raw and urban Bluesy sound of Funk, and the knowing sophistication of 1970s Soul. Added to which the afore mentioned candid and no nonsense lyrics all of which help to make this a land mark record by the great Johnnie Taylor. Certainly Stax thought so as they re-issued it in the UK on # 2025 188, and again  # STX 2013, and yet again STAX 2005 (Red label), and finally in 1981 on STAX 1008 (Yellow label)  it in an attractive picture cover (see below).
