HE'S BEEN A SHELTER FOR ME * SOUL STIRRERS * SAR 101 * USA
The Soul Stirrers have solid gold history stretching way back to 1936; the first recordings were as The Five Soul Stirrers Of Houston, with two discs for The Library of Congress. Their next three records were cut for John Levy's Los Angeles based Bronze label in 1939/40, as by The Five Soul Stirrers, the records were re issued on W&W and Down Beat respectively. In 1945 they were recording for 20th Century as The Five Gospel Souls, though these records were reissued on Gotham and 20th Century as by The Gospel Stirrers. They started to be called The Soul Stirrers (with Willie Eason) in 1946 while recording for Aladdin. It was in the 1950s while recording for Art Rupe's Specialty imprint that Sam Cooke began to recorded with them.
The group left Specialty in 1959 to record for Sam Cook's Sar label; their dynamic and rousing He's Been A Shelter For Me is from their first Sar release and features the mighty voice of Paul Foster on lead with Jimmy Outler, Leroy Crume (on guitar) and Richard Gibbs.
