IT'S THE SAME OLD SONG * FOUR TOPS * TAMLA MOTOWN 528 * UK
The Four Tops were at the height of their powers when they cut a triumvirate of truly magnificent records I Can't Help Myself, It's The Same Old Song and Reach Out For Me. I don't say they are my particular favorites; if pushed I would say that I preferred Baby I Need Your Loving, I Like Everything About You or Ask The Lonely, but the former three have a dimension that enabled them to be both a top quality Soul record and have universal appeal to the general public who can, it seems, usually only respond to novelty and clamor.
When It's The Same Old Song was released, it, like I Can't Help Myself and Reach Out For Me, was an instant hit with, those often discerning Soul fans: the Mods. But now, possibly due to the groups subsequent immense popularity, they tend to get overlooked, but, like the works of Shakespeare or Hogarth, they appeal [d] to both the connoisseur and the indifferent, and that is no mean feat in any art form.
